GIVE AFRICA HOPE EVENTS TO BENEFIT FAMINE RELIEF EFFORTS IN THE HORN OF AFRICA

ARTISTS UNITE TO ASSIST: Gramps Morgan, Peetah Morgan, J Boog and Anthony David

<Dallas, Texas> Gramps Morgan, Peetah Morgan, J Boog and Anthony David are among the artists who are heading to Dallas, Texas and eventually to Nairobi, Kenya at the end of September to assist with the famine relief efforts already underway there. What started as a noble cause to make custom T-Shirts and send the proceeds to the relief efforts in the Horn of Africa, has become a movement that Thomas Mwicigi, a native of Kenya, is thrilled about. Thomas, who started his Uhuru Clothing line in 2007 designed a custom famine relief t-shirt to sell via his website to raise money. “My initial goal was minimal and simple but I felt the need to include other Africans in the Diaspora and friends of Africans in order make a much bigger impact”, says Thomas. This realization for large-scale collaborations and planning is what connected Thomas to a friend, Anne-Marie who happened to be already brainstorming on ways to help out as well. “We were on the same page from the word go”, says Anne-Marie, “I called on my musical artist friends who did not think twice about partnering with us. Project Maisha came as an easy choice as they are a UNICEF USA partner, where all funds made through the site are collected and distributed by UNICEF USA directly to the relief efforts in the Horn of Africa”. The Give Africa Hope Benefit team has since partnered with several other individuals and organizations both in the USA and in Kenya to help assist in making the project a success.

“Kenya and the entire African continent has been really good to us”, says Gramps and Peetah of world renowned sibling band Morgan Heritage; “Africa is home to us and when they hurt, we hurt”, added Peetah. Gramps, who was in Kenya in July of 2010 performing as a solo artist, has a strong fan base there and he could not agree more, “the people of Kenya have shown me so much love and it would only be natural for me to give back to them as much as I can”. The two brothers just completed a grueling yet successful European tour where the African Diaspora was a staple presence at all their shows across Europe. J Boog, who worked very closely with the Morgan brothers on his upcoming album, says he is happy to take some time off from promoting and touring to give back. Gramps produced several songs on the album while Peetah is featured on several of the singles. “This will be my inaugural visit to the African Continent and it could not be for a more deserving reason. Africa is the cradle of mankind and more so East Africa, we have to do whatever it takes to assist the people and revive this historic part of our world”. Anthony David, who just came back from performing in Kenya, is a favorite of many including the first family of the USA! Anthony was given the Kenyan name Karanja by many who thought he favored the Kikuyu people of central Kenya. He has been busy touring since releasing his third album “As Above So Below” back in April of this year.

The Artists will be performing at two events in Dallas, Texas on the 23rd and 24th of September 2011. Tickets and detailed information to both events are now available at http://giveafricahope.eventbrite.com/

Benefit T-Shirts are on sale at http://www.uhuruclothing.bigcartel.com/

Direct donations to the famine relief efforts can be made to UNICEF via Project Maisha at

http://www.irelieforg.org/projectmaisha/

The artists will then head to Kenya where they will assist will additional collections, deliveries and distribution of the famine relief supplies. They all agree that supporting and assisting from the ground will create much greater awareness and assistance from other international celebrities and organizations. The team says, “there is a need to prevent this horrible famine cycle that seems to happen about every few years, by assisting with advancements in agriculture, education, and creation of new sustainable industries in the area. Give Africa Hope is a not-for-profit pursuit hoping to unite people and organizations from around the world in these efforts”. The entire team is hoping to make this an annual pilgrimage as they all agree that the needs require much more ambitious aims and efforts than just food and water, a couple of concerts or one visit to the area.

Our Focus Is Global

Miracles, big and small, are needed on an international level daily.  We are an international organization by nature, so it should be no surprise that our first event took place in Nairobi, Kenya. MOM is proud to have partnered with Hands Across Kenya to bring international reggae artist Gramps Morgan to Kenya.  The concert was in support of a project aimed at providing healthcare to Kenyans through the expansion of services and supplies at local medical clinics.  More information can be found under the EVENTS section.

Miracle Spotlight: Port Victoria Medical Camp

Published by MOMINTL on July 7th, 2010

We feel it is an important part of our mission to shine a light on those who follow through with the opportunities made possible by music and who actually make the miracles happen.  In this “Miracle Spotlight”, we take a closer look at the Port Victoria Medical Camp initiative that benefited from the MOM / Hands Across Kenya Charity Concert (July 2010).

Rennatus Mdodo, PhD, served as the project coordinator for this tremendous effort.  Through his and others efforts,  a free medical camp was conducted for 5 days at Port Victoria in Bunyala. The mission brought together 20 medical, public health students and health professionals from different institutions across the United States, United Kingdom and Kenya. Part of this mission included visiting public health facilities such as the CDC laboratory, Kenyatta National Hospital and Kenya AIDS Vaccine Initiative Center.

Another impressive fact is that the project was a volunteer driven initiative, responding to the growing need to address health challenges that continue to oppress millions of people in rural Kenya. The mission was to help alleviate some of these health problems through a free medical camp. Basic things such as medical supplies and mosquito nets were provided to the local population, HIV testing and counseling were available, and 5,000 children were de-wormed at Port Victoria. The medical camp also provided a free health clinic, expanding the services and supplies at the local medical center while implementing sustainable, student developed public health interventions.

Most of our medicines and medical supplies were donated by well wishers in the United States and Canada or bought by our volunteers at a subsidized price. All excess medicines and disposable medical supplies were donated to the Port Victoria hospital. The charity concert played a significant role in helping cover some of the expenses associated with such an ambitious effort.  MOM’s own Anne-Marie Oyugah played a lead role in organizing the event.

We are extremely proud and humble about the small role we played in this event, and hope to use it as an example to create more miracles for those who need it.

Kenya Event Announcement

Published by MOMINTL on May 15th, 2010

<<PRESS RELEASE: May 15, 2010>>

With Gramps Morgan on a mission to heal the world with his music, it should come as no surprise that he is working with a charity organization called Music Orchestrating Miracles (MOM).

Music has the power to move, inspire, heal, and to bring people together like no other art form. It makes miracles happen every day and has the power to change lives. This fundamental truth inspired the formation of Music Orchestrating Miracles (MOM), a not-for-profit organization focused on the creation of miracles through the power of music. Through the power of music, MOM seeks to bring people together to impact those in need, creating miracles both big and small.

‘Hands across Kenya’ is MOM’s first charity concert which will be hosted in conjunction with capital FM DJs and Dohty Family Entertainment. The concert will be held at Carnivor Simba Salon, on Lang’ata Rd, in Nairobi, Kenya on July 10, 2010 featuring Gramps Morgan and local Kenyan acts.

All proceeds from the ‘Hands Across Kenya’ concert will go towards a free medical camp at Port Victoria, in Bunyala. This free medical camp is being administered by 20 volunteers including medical and public health students; physicians and other health professionals from different institutions across Kenya, the US and the UK.

Responding to the growing need to address health challenges oppressing millions of people in rural Kenya, Rennatus Mdodo, PhD and Project Coordinator of the Port Victoria Medical Camp explains,

“Our mission is to help alleviate some of these health problems through a 5 day free medical camp. We will also supply mosquito nets, conduct HIV testing and counselling, and de-worm 5,000 children.”

By expanding the services and supplies at the local medical center, as well as implementing sustainable, student developed public health interventions these volunteers are able to provide a free health clinic. Part of the mission will alsoinclude visiting public health facilities such as the CDC laboratory, Kenyatta National Hospital, and the Kenya AIDS Vaccine Initiative.

Most of the medicines and medical supplies have been donated from supporters in Canada and the United States and bought by the team of volunteers. All of the ‘Hands across Kenya’ concert proceeds will help to cover some of the expenses of the free Port Victoria Medical Camp.

“This opportunity to help the people of Kenya is extraordinary. We at Music Orchestrating Miracles are looking forward to partnering with Hands across Kenya for this, our first major international event”. David Broderick, Director, Music Orchestrating Miracles (MOM).
